What It Is
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a therapy that utilizes the persons own blood to stimulate and accelerate the repair of damaged tissue in and around joints.
How It Works
When platelets in your blood become exposed due to injury they immediately get together, and start calling out for help. They do this by sending chemical signals out to more platelets to assist in restoring proper tissue structure and function. The platelets’ most important function in tissue repair however, is the release of important growth factors to attract the body’s own stem cells to the injured tissue.
Stem cells are amazing because they have the ability to differentiate in into many different types of cells including those that produce the most abundant protein that make up connective tissue in the human body; collagen! It connects, anchors structures, and gives support throughout the body. In other words, it hold it all together.
By concentrating the platelets and injecting them at the site of injury or degeneration, we can now magnify the body’s ability to respond by recruiting and activating more of the body's own stem cells to the injured area so they can differentiate into collagen producing cells and regenerate new healthy and strong ligaments, tendons and cartilage.
In other words PRP, is much more effective than regular prolotherapy (with dextrose), because instead of recruiting the components needed to repair tissue, we inject them directly to the site. This strengthens and speeds healing time significantly.

When To Consider It
PRP should be considered if the injury or condition hasn't resolved in six months, despite regular prolotherapy treatments, and in degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis.
