What It Is
Prolotherapy or Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) is a simple and natural
nonsurgical technique that relieves chronic pain by promoting the body to repair
damaged or weakened joints, ligaments and tendons. The limited blood supply and poor
healing properties of these tissues make prolotherapy usually necessary after injury. It’s
earliest recorded use goes all the way back to Roman times, to treat the injured
shoulders of gladiators; however, our technique has improved since then! A small
injection of dextrose (aka sugar water) and mild anesthetic is injected where the
stresses to the ligaments or tendons are the greatest - where they attach to bone. This is
the weakest and most likely area of injury and pain. Locating and treating this point
with Prolotherapy is our focus.

How It Works
By precisely injecting a small amount of solution to the injured tendon or ligament, we slightly irritate the area, creating a small controlled inflammatory response. This stimulates the body to recruit it’s own natural healing mechanisms, that specialize in repairing damaged tissue, thereby laying down new strong tissue on top of the old
injured tissue. With additional treatments this tissue gradually builds resulting in a
stronger and thicker structure, restoring the previously injured area to it’s former glory!

Success Rate
Prolotherapy has a fantastic track record, with great results! Nothing, of course, is absolute. If performed by a skilled practitioner, and the patient is properly invested in their health, prolotherapy is 85% plus effective.
Typically people start feeling better after their first treatment. Some need more. If no improvement is made after five or six sessions, PRP should be considered for a stronger and faster healing response.

When To Consider It
People with long standing injuries that have never fully healed, and possibly require surgery, are almost always good candidates for Prolotherapy. Even recent injuries to joints can almost certainly benefit. If a tendon or ligament is completely torn, surgery is usually required. A simple MRI will answer this question quickly. Often it is pretty obvious, if there is a complete tear. In any case, a doctor skilled and qualified in Prolotherapy can help. Rarely is an injury completely isolated to a single structure. In other words, even if one has completely torn a tendon or ligament, other tendons and ligaments have usually received some collateral damage, and are in need of treatment.
Safety
Prolotherapy is a very safe procedure with very few risks or side effects. However, like
any injection procedure, it carries small risks like infection, bruising, and swelling.
Depending on the area being treated, the risks can be less or more severe. These should
always be discussed with the doctor prior to treatment.
